Biography

Richard Taylor was born in England in 1940. In 1960 he emigrated to the United States where he settled in Southern California. In 1988, he quit his position as Director of Manufacturing for a major U.S. corporation and realized his dream which was to live in Northern California (with its English climate!) and produce his own creations.

Richard's first woodworking project is still proudly displayed in his mother's home in Deal, England. It's a small table, rough, but servicable after 45 years. His more current works emphasize design, as Richard considers himself a designer first. While he is interested and influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement, his work doesn't always fit in that genre. He prides himself in his attention to detail and high quality of workmanship.

Richard's interest in high quality extends to other areas, including food. His long quest for the perfect loaf of bread led him to building an outdoor bread oven. He and his partner, Katherine Almy, spent the summer of 2000 building it, and you can see a "slide show" of the whole process. Keep in mind that, although she's not in the pictures (she took them!), Katherine helped build the thing. You can find links to more information about bread making and bread ovens on our Resources page.

“I work hard,” says Richard, “but I’m very lucky. I live by my own work and am proud of my designs. I love what I do and am having fun.” Who could ask for more?
