Richard Taylor Designs is a small, family-owned business located in the Redwood forests of Northern California. While we specialize in fine lighting, we also have other products available, such as our Flame Vase, and our picture frames. Each product begins with an original and unique design. I find inspiration from nature, from the wood itself, and from the designs of the Arts and Crafts movement. Drawings and several prototypes bring forth the final product, developed carefully and patiently, with attention to detail.
Our finishes are hand-rubbed in to each piece. While hand finishing is much more labor intensive and time consuming, the results are far superior to any other method of finishing in terms of aesthetics and quality. A good finish allows the inherant beauty of the wood to shine through.
We like to use local woods, many of which are as beautiful as the most exotic hardwoods. I especially like Pacific Maple with all of its exquisite figuring, the warm rich tones of California Walnut, and Tan Oak. Often these woods are harvested by individuals one tree at a time. This method is gentle to the environment and the trees are not endangered. Tan Oak, for example, is generating wood three times faster than it is being harvested.
Our products are created with great respect and admiration for the medium. The beauty exists in the wood, and our job is merely to unlock that beauty and show it off to its fullest potential. Work of this quality is not just furniture, but an integral part of our lives in the natural world.
